Jesus San-Miguel-Ayanz is a senior researcher at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy. He received his PhD (1993) and MSc (1989) by the University of California-Berkeley,  Berkeley, California, U.S.A. and his Forest Engineering Degree (1987) from Polytechnic University, Madrid, Spain. His research focuses on the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems in forestry and the development of early warning and monitoring systems for wildfires.  He leads the operation and further development of the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) in pan-European region and the development of the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), under the umbrella of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the EU Copernicus Programs.
