I have been an expert for private sector investments at the Forests for the Future Facility of the European Commission since the beginning of 2020. Previously I worked as a Forest Finance Expert at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2018 to 2019), in different positions (Senior Partner) at Indufor Helsinki (1992 to 2018). Prior to that I worked in the FAO (1989-1992), University of Helsinki (1985-88) and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (1984). I hold a master’s degree in forest economics (M.Sc. For.) from the University of Helsinki (1988) and MBA (International finance) from Aalto University (2003). My core competences have accrued over three decades of professional life in forest and other land-based value chain investment analysis, financing, forest strategies, policy and governance as well as fund raising and agro/forest businesses. I have been a team leader and advisor focusing on tropical forest plantations, boreal, temperate and tropical natural forests and other land uses such as coffee, tea, rubber and palm oil. I have assisted several forestry and agrobusiness companies in their strategies on sustainable sourcing of wood & fiber & other raw materials: considering also new technologies, new products and new markets. The strategy work has included assessment of different product portfolios based on available resources and realistic markets. In addition, I have assisted financial investors in developing their forest investment strategies especially in emerging markets. Recently, my work at the Forest for the Future Facility has focused on catalysing private investments in sustainable forest-based value chains which comply with ESG criteria in developing countries.
