Description

Narayan Kaji Shrestha has won the first-ever Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award in 2012 for his outstanding contribution to forestry. Dr Shrestha is recognized as one of main architects of the user-based community forestry movement in Nepal, which he has spent four decades promoting and which has contributed significantly to restoring forest resources in the country. He guided early attempts to create a more participatory approach to community decision-making, reaching out to women, disadvantaged people and low-caste villagers and initiating the country’s first user-managed community forestry group. Recently, he is trying to promote user based eco-system management by combining community forestry, ecosystem, biodiversity to mitigate and adapt effects of climate change. He is known as a promoter of civil society organizations and networks in Nepal.
