e-Forum: Untapping the potential of non-timber forest products for Latin American bioeconomy: Connecting bioeconomy & forests to people and human development

May 3, 2022 | 6:00 PM KST - 7:30 PM KST

Conference Room 327B

According to data from the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA 2020), Latin America has 20 to 25% of the world's forest cover. Non-timber forest products (NTFP) are of great importance to the economies of local communities in Latin America and represent alternative uses of forests. There is a wide variety of NTFP produced in the countries of this region that are sold in local and international markets. Some countries have implemented public policies aimed at developing NTFP and Bioeconomy value chains, such as Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador. In this side event we will present the summary and results of the "e-Forum: Untapping the Potential of Non-Timber Forest Products for Latin American Bioeconomy” scheduled for March 2022. The e-forum aims to identify and propose actions to strengthen the bioeconomy in Latin America with a focus on NTFP value chains. Through discussions and conversations between relevant experts, the forum will address specific objectives: systematize and increase visibility and awareness of information referring to NTFP and their importance in bioeconomies; discuss possibilities for valuing products through the construction of innovation, research and development networks; improve public policies related to bioeconomy and NTFP; propose inclusive economic strategies for producers in the post-pandemic period. The side event will provide an opportunity to discuss possibilities for the creation of a Latin American network to strengthen NTFP value chains and the bioeconomy in the region. The proposal is for participants to get involved in the formation of this network that can integrate more researchers and countries in favour of the Latin American bioeconomy that can relate to other networks (such as the European network) and have the support of FAO and of IUFRO. This side event is in synergy with 2 other side events: about the green pathway to growth and sustainability (FAO) and the IUFRO Task Force “Unlocking the Bioeconomy and NTFPs”.
